The Influence of Anglicisms and Other Foreign Borrowings on the Vocabulary of Modern French: Analysis, Debates, and Language Policies

Modern French is the result of a continuous linguistic evolution, marked by constant contact with other languages. This article examines the impact of linguistic borrowings, with a particular focus on anglicisms, which have become a prominent phenomenon in the 20th and 21st centuries. The analysis explores the typology of anglicisms (lexical, semantic, syntactic, morphological, graphical, phonetic, and pseudo-anglicisms), distinguishing them from historical borrowings from Latin, Germanic, Arabic, and Italian. It is shown that the influence of English—driven by globalization and technological advancements—penetrates various layers of the French language structure. The article addresses contemporary debates surrounding the integration of such borrowings, which oscillate between the perception of enrichment and the fear of a threat to linguistic identity. Particular attention is paid to regional specificities, especially the situation in Quebec compared to metropolitan France. Finally, the linguistic policies implemented by institutions such as the Académie française and the Office québécois de la langue française are examined, assessing their effectiveness in the face of rapid language change.
