The First Examples of the Etude Genre in the Piano Music of Azerbaijani Composers

Abstract

This article examines the emergence and early development of the etude genre in the piano music of Azerbaijani composers and evaluates its artistic, pedagogical, and historical significance for the formation of the national piano school. Using a qualitative musicological approach, the study combines historical review, score analysis, and comparative interpretation. It considers formal structure, tonality, thematic development, texture, rhythmic organization, expressive character, and the technical objectives of selected works. Particular attention is given to Elmira Nazirova’s four piano etudes, which are regarded as the earliest examples of the genre in Azerbaijani piano music. The analysis shows that these works unite virtuoso technique with lyrical, dramatic, and nationally distinctive musical imagery. The study also discusses Farida Guliyeva’s pedagogically oriented Six Etudes and Aziz Azizli’s Two Etudes for Piano, emphasizing their contribution to finger technique, coordination, rhythmic precision, and expressive performance. Etude-like features in Azerbaijani toccatas and other piano works are also considered. The findings indicate that, although Azerbaijani composers used the etude less frequently than other piano genres, the surviving examples played a major role in integrating European pianistic traditions with Azerbaijani musical language. They remain valuable for both performance training and the study of the country’s twentieth-century musical heritage.
