Decriminalization in criminal law refers to the removal of penalties for certain offenses, particularly minor legal violations, and shifting the focus from punishment to rehabilitation. This approach can help reduce prison overcrowding, improve public health outcomes, and allow law enforcement resources to be redirected toward more serious crimes. Additionally, it may contribute to reducing social inequalities and mitigating negative perceptions surrounding certain offenses. However, decriminalization also carries potential risks, as it may lead to the wider spread of harmful behaviors in some cases.
